Heart Attack Takes Orofino Woman, Mrs. Mary Smathers

      OROFINO - Mrs. Mary Edna Smathers, 50, died at 5 a.m. Thursday at the Clearwater Valley Hospital here of a heart attack.

     She entered the hospital Wednesday after suffering a heart attack at her home here.

     She had been a resident of Orofino since 1962. Her husband was manager of the Nezperce Rochdale Co. at Orofino until the elevator burned and since has worked for the firm at Greer and Nezperce. They lived at Nezperce for nine years prior to moving to Orofino.

     She was born March 3, 1918 at Vancouver, B.C., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Goard. She received her education there and married John Smathers on Aug. 24, 1936, at Vancouver.

     Following marriage they farmed at Dawson Creek, B.C., until moving to Nezperce in 1951.

     She was a member of the Orofino Christian Church.

     She is survived by her husband at their home; two sons, Edward L. (Ted) Smathers, Orofino, and John C. Smathers Jr., Lewiston; one daughter, Mrs Jeanne Braun, Lewiston; five sisters, Mrs. Orville Hayes, Mrs. Edward Carr, and Mrs. Leonard Owens, all of Vancouver, Mrs. William Basker, Buffalo Creek, B.C., and Mrs. Leslie Welch, Lewiston; and seven grandchildren.

     The funeral will be Monday at the First Christian Church of Nezperce at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Howard L. Hake, pastor of the Clarkston Christian Church, officiating. Burial will follow at the Nezperce Cemetery.

     The family suggests that any memorials be made to the Shrine Hospital for Crippled Children, Spokane.

     Gilbert's Funeral Chapel, Orofino, is in charge of arrangements.
